Treadway Mountain
is a moderate climb with views of the Adirondack High Peaks and located by gorgeous Putnam Pond Campground, a popular and remote campground in Ticonderoga NY.
Mount Defiance, an 853 foot hill is located in “Ti,” and not only has a breathtaking view of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga, but it bears an amazing history. During the Revolutionary War, in the Battle of Ticonderoga, the British army succeeded in stationing canons on top Mount Defiance, which overlooked Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Independence, forcing the Americans to abandon the forts. The current walking road is the road British General Burgoyne’s army constructed in 1777.
Cook Mountain is a 200 acre-preserve providing great views of Lake George, the Champlain Valley, and Vermont’s Green Mountains. The trail is a little over a mile to the summit and is a short, steep climb. Besides hiking trails, this 200-acre conservancy has two beaver ponds, historic grave sites, and much wildlife. A moderately difficult ascent taking about 45 minutes, accessed from Baldwin Road.
Belfry Mountain is the easiest Fire Tower Challenge hike at just 0.3 miles. It’s located in the town of Moriah, NY just above an abandoned mining area. Views from the summit include Lake Champlain, Green Mountains, Hurricane and Whiteface Mountain and Rocky and Giant to the southwest as well as the Great Range. For more intense hiking experiences, the Adirondack High Peaks are just a short drive away. Ticonderoga NY is the perfect destination for those looking to experience the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains or the pristine lakes of upstate NY!
BUCK MOUNTAIN HIKING
- The bald-rock summit of Buck Mountain offers, above all, a sense of serenity and peace. The cool breeze, the endless expanse of green, and the spectacular scenery all unite to give you a unique Adirondack experience.
Buck is a moderate hike of three miles (one way), with a few challenging spots. Be sure to follow the yellow markers! Be especially careful not to take a right-hand turn early in the hike. Check out both Cat Mountain and Tongue Mountain for a more challenging hike if you prefer.
PROSPECT MOUNTAIN HIKING
- Prospect Mountain is one of the most popular hikes in the Lake George Region, and is a 3-mile round-trip hike.
Because its steep grade makes it quite difficult in spots, this hike is not recommended for young children. Upon reaching the summit 2,030 feet above sea level, hikers will be rewarded with 100-mile views of Lake George and the Adirondacks, plus Vermont's Green Mountains and New Hampshire's White Mountains.
NATURAL STONE BRIDGE AND CAVES PARK - Summer: Hike self-guided tour & explore LARGEST cave entrance in East, waterfalls, gorge, caves. Also guided adventure tours, gemstone mining, disc golf, climbing walls, dino dig, simulated mines, & extensive rock shop. Winter: snowshoe trails/tour.
RAIL BIKING - ** New Attraction **
Rail-biking with
Revolution Rail Co.
is a fun excursion activity that allows riders to ride the railroad tracks under their own power and explore a section of the Adirondacks that has never seen passenger traffic.
Once railbikers check in at the historic North Creek Railroad Station, they’ll take a short shuttle ride 5 miles north of town to the tour launch point. After a short safety briefing, the tour guides will lead the railbikers further north on a 6 mile round trip cruise.
The tour takes riders through the beautiful Adirondack forest canopy along the banks of the Hudson River, and then over the Hudson on a spectacular trestle bridge before turning for home and returning to the launch point and the shuttle bus ride back to the North Creek Railroad Station.
